TanStack Router vs React Router: Client-Side Routing Compared
Compare TanStack Router and React Router on type safety, search params, data loading, and developer experience.
Overview
TanStack Router and React Router are both client-side routing libraries for React, but they target different developer priorities. React Router, the original React routing library, has been the default choice for over a decade. TanStack Router, from the creator of TanStack Query, is a newer library built from the ground up with type safety as its core design principle — every route, parameter, search param, and loader is fully typed.
The choice comes down to whether type safety in routing justifies adopting a newer, less established library over the proven stability of React Router.
Key Technical Differences
TanStack Router's defining feature is end-to-end type safety. When you define a route with path parameters and search params, TypeScript knows the exact shape of those values everywhere in your application. Navigate to /users/:userId and userId is typed as a string in the component, the loader, and any link that targets that route. Search params can be validated with Zod schemas, ensuring that ?page=2&sort=name is parsed, validated, and typed automatically.
React Router's TypeScript support is functional but not as deeply integrated. Route params are typed as string | undefined by default, and useSearchParams returns a raw URLSearchParams object that requires manual parsing. You can add type safety through wrappers and conventions, but it is not built into the library's core architecture.
Data loading is another differentiator. TanStack Router has built-in loaders with automatic caching, deduplication, and stale-while-revalidate behavior — similar to TanStack Query but integrated into the route lifecycle. React Router v6.4+ added loaders and actions inspired by Remix, which provide a clean data loading model but without the same level of caching sophistication.
TanStack Router also provides dedicated devtools that visualize the route tree, current params, search state, and loader cache. This is invaluable for debugging complex routing scenarios. React Router has no built-in devtools equivalent.
Performance & Scale
Both libraries handle routing efficiently with minimal overhead. Bundle sizes are comparable (~12-14 KB gzipped). TanStack Router's loader caching can reduce network requests by avoiding redundant data fetching when navigating back to previously visited routes — a behavior you would otherwise implement manually with React Router and a data fetching library.
For applications with complex search/filter UIs — e-commerce product listings, data dashboards, search pages — TanStack Router's typed search params provide significant safety benefits. Typos in search param names, incorrect types, and missing validation are caught at compile time rather than causing silent bugs in production.
When to Choose Each
Choose TanStack Router for new TypeScript projects where routing type safety prevents bugs, especially applications with complex URL state (filters, pagination, sorting). It integrates naturally with TanStack Query and is the most type-safe routing option available for React.
Choose React Router when you have an existing application, when your team values the stability of a decade-old library, or when you are using Remix (which builds on React Router's primitives). React Router's community resources, migration guides, and ecosystem are unmatched.

TanStack Router is the most type-safe React routing library available — every route, param, and search param is fully typed. React Router is the most proven — a decade of stability, the largest community, and the foundation of Remix. Choose TanStack Router for type safety in new projects; choose React Router for stability and ecosystem in existing applications.
