PagerDuty and OpsGenie (now part of Atlassian) are the two leading incident management platforms for on-call engineering teams. PagerDuty's model is service-centric: alerts are routed to services, services have escalation policies, and on-call schedules are attached to those policies. OpsGenie's model is team-centric: alerts are routed to teams, and teams own schedules and escalation. The right model depends on how your organization is structured.
Key Technical Differences
PagerDuty's event intelligence and AIOps capabilities are industry-leading. Its alert grouping reduces notification fatigue by correlating related alerts into a single incident. The Event Orchestration feature enables complex routing rules, suppression conditions, and automated responses before a human is ever paged. These capabilities are mature and battle-tested at enterprise scale.
OpsGenie's integration with the Atlassian suite is its primary differentiator. Jira Service Management (which now includes OpsGenie functionality) enables seamless bidirectional sync between Jira tickets and incidents. Teams running Confluence wikis, Jira boards, and Bitbucket pipelines benefit from native alert-to-ticket workflows without custom integrations.
Escalation policies in PagerDuty support multiple layers with time-based escalation, acknowledgment requirements, and per-service override schedules. OpsGenie's escalation rules are simpler but cover the majority of use cases. For complex multi-tier escalation trees (common in large enterprises), PagerDuty provides more granular control.
Performance & Scale
Both platforms are SaaS-hosted with 99.99% uptime SLAs and global notification infrastructure. PagerDuty has been validated at the largest scales — Slack, Comcast, and DoorDash use it across hundreds of on-call engineers. OpsGenie scales adequately for most organizations but is less commonly cited in extreme-scale deployments.
When to Choose Each
Choose PagerDuty for large organizations with complex escalation requirements, advanced AIOps needs, or deep ITSM integrations. The higher cost is justified by richer automation capabilities.
Choose OpsGenie for teams in the Atlassian ecosystem, where Jira-incident integration is a priority, or for cost-conscious organizations where simpler scheduling and escalation meet requirements.

PagerDuty is the more capable and feature-rich platform for enterprise incident management; OpsGenie wins on Atlassian ecosystem integration and pricing. Teams on the Atlassian stack should default to OpsGenie; teams with complex multi-team escalation requirements should evaluate PagerDuty.
