Cloudflare vs Akamai

Cloudflare and Akamai represent two different eras of edge computing. Akamai, founded in 1998, is the original CDN with the world's largest edge network. Cloudflare, founded in 2009, is the modern challenger that has democratized edge services with transparent pricing and developer-friendly tools.

Scale and Network

Akamai has the largest CDN network in the world: 4,200+ locations across 130+ countries. This massive footprint is especially valuable for media delivery, where proximity to end users directly impacts streaming quality. Cloudflare's 300+ city network is smaller but uses anycast routing to efficiently serve global traffic.

Pricing and Accessibility

Cloudflare disrupted the CDN market by offering a free tier with unlimited bandwidth, SSL, and DDoS protection. Anyone can set up Cloudflare in minutes by changing DNS nameservers. Akamai has no public pricing, no free tier, and requires enterprise sales conversations. For startups and small businesses, Cloudflare is the clear choice.

Enterprise Security

Akamai's security portfolio is more mature for large enterprises: Prolexic for dedicated DDoS mitigation, Bot Manager with advanced detection, Guardicore for micro-segmentation, and Enterprise Application Access for zero trust. Cloudflare's security is strong and improving rapidly, but Akamai has decades of enterprise security expertise.

Media Delivery

Akamai dominates video streaming delivery. Major streaming platforms, broadcasters, and gaming companies rely on Akamai for live and on-demand video. Cloudflare's Stream product handles video but is less specialized. For media-heavy workloads, Akamai's purpose-built delivery infrastructure is unmatched.
