Ceph vs MinIO

Ceph and MinIO are both open-source distributed storage systems, but they solve different problems. Ceph is a unified storage platform providing block, object, and file storage. MinIO is a focused, high-performance object storage system with S3 compatibility.

Architecture

Ceph — Unified Storage

Ceph uses the RADOS (Reliable Autonomic Distributed Object Store) layer as its foundation. On top of RADOS, three interfaces serve different storage needs:

  • RBD (RADOS Block Device): Block storage for VMs and databases
  • RGW (RADOS Gateway): S3/Swift-compatible object storage
  • CephFS: POSIX-compliant distributed filesystem

This versatility makes Ceph the go-to for organizations needing multiple storage types from one platform. The trade-off is complexity: monitors, OSDs, placement groups, and CRUSH maps require expertise.

MinIO — Focused Object Storage

MinIO does one thing: S3-compatible object storage. A single Go binary runs on bare metal, VMs, or Kubernetes. Erasure coding protects data across drives and nodes. The simplicity is intentional — fewer moving parts mean easier operations and better performance.

MinIO is optimized for modern hardware, particularly NVMe SSDs. On fast storage, MinIO consistently outperforms Ceph's RADOS Gateway for object operations.

Kubernetes Story

Ceph via Rook-Ceph provides Kubernetes PersistentVolumes (RBD for block, CephFS for shared files) and object storage (RGW). This makes Ceph a complete storage solution for Kubernetes clusters.

MinIO provides object storage only on Kubernetes. For PersistentVolumes, you need a separate solution. If your workloads are object-storage-centric (ML training, data lakes, backups), MinIO is simpler. If you need block and file storage too, Ceph is necessary.

Operational Reality

Ceph's operational complexity is its biggest drawback. Capacity planning, PG management, CRUSH tuning, and multi-daemon monitoring require dedicated storage engineering expertise. MinIO's single-binary deployment is comparatively trivial.
